📘 What is CGPA? CONCEPT
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a standardized method of measuring overall academic performance across multiple semesters or subjects.
In India, CGPA is mostly used on a 10-point scale. It represents the average of grade points scored in all subjects, excluding additional/elective subjects in some systems like CBSE.
CGPA is calculated by averaging grade points of all main subjects
It ranges from 0 to 10 (in most Indian systems)
Used by CBSE, ICSE, and most Indian universities
More accurate than simple percentage for ranking students
📗 What is SGPA? CONCEPT
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your GPA for a single semester only. CGPA is the cumulative average of all your SGPAs.
Relationship: CGPA = Average of all SGPAs
SGPA is calculated at the end of each semester
CGPA keeps updating as each new semester is completed
A low SGPA in one semester can bring down your CGPA
Most searched questions about CGPA and percentage conversion
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is calculated by averaging the grade points of all your subjects across all semesters. Formula: CGPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Subjects (or Credits). For CBSE: Add grade points of 5 main subjects and divide by 5. Example: If you scored Grade Points 9, 8, 9, 7, 8 → CGPA = (9+8+9+7+8) ÷ 5 = 8.2
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a 10-point grading system used to represent a student's overall academic performance across all subjects and semesters. It is more balanced than percentage as it accounts for all semesters cumulatively. A CGPA of 8.0 generally means approximately 76% in the standard formula.
To convert CGPA to percentage: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (for CBSE and most Indian universities). Examples: 9.0 CGPA = 85.5% | 8.0 CGPA = 76% | 7.0 CGPA = 66.5% | 6.0 CGPA = 57%. For Anna University: Percentage = (CGPA × 10) – 7.5
Step 1: Note your CGPA (e.g., 7.8). Step 2: Use the formula Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Step 3: Calculate: 7.8 × 9.5 = 74.1%. Step 4: Your percentage is 74.1%. Alternatively, use our free converter tool above for instant results without any manual calculation.
The simplest way: multiply your CGPA by 9.5. This formula is recommended by CBSE and accepted by most Indian universities and employers. For example: 8.6 CGPA × 9.5 = 81.7%. Some universities have their own formulas (see our table above). When in doubt, use the ×9.5 formula — it is the most widely accepted.
CGPA from SGPA Formula: CGPA = (SGPA1 + SGPA2 + ... + SGPAn) ÷ n, where n is the total number of semesters. Example: If your 4 semester SGPAs are 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 8.0 → CGPA = (7.5+8.0+8.5+8.0) ÷ 4 = 32 ÷ 4 = 8.0 CGPA. Use our SGPA to CGPA calculator above to do this instantly!
To reverse-calculate CGPA from percentage: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. Example: 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. 85.5% ÷ 9.5 = 9.0 CGPA. Use the "Percentage → CGPA" tab in our calculator above for instant conversion.
CGPA score is a number on a 0–10 scale that represents your overall academic performance.
To convert CGPA to total marks: First convert CGPA to percentage (CGPA × 9.5), then multiply by total maximum marks ÷ 100. Example: CGPA 8.0, Total max marks 600 → Step 1: 8.0 × 9.5 = 76% → Step 2: 76% × 600 = 456 total marks out of 600.
Step 1: Find the grade point for each subject using CBSE scale: 91-100→10, 81-90→9, 71-80→8, 61-70→7, 51-60→6, 41-50→5, 33-40→4. Step 2: Add all grade points. Step 3: Divide by number of subjects. Example: Marks 85, 78, 92, 67, 71 → GPs: 9,8,10,7,8 → CGPA = (9+8+10+7+8)÷5 = 8.4
CGPA is calculated by: (1) Assigning grade points to each subject based on marks scored. (2) Multiplying each grade point by the credit hours of that subject (for credit-based systems). (3) Summing all (Grade Points × Credits). (4) Dividing by total credit hours. For CBSE (non-credit based): simply average the grade points of all 5 main subjects.
